Qazi Touqeer is an Indian singer, actor and YouTuber from Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir who became a national sensation by winning the singing reality show Fame Gurukul (2005) along with Ruprekha Banerjee. He sings in Kashmiri, Hindi and Urdu and was declared "Hero of Kashmir" by President of India A.P.J. Abdul Kalam after his win.

Born on 2 June 1985/1986 in Srinagar, Qazi had no formal singing training before Fame Gurukul, yet he set a record for highest votes in Indian reality shows at that time. He is known for the album Yeh Pal (2006) and the song Afghan Jalebi (2015) with Katrina Kaif. In 2026 he returned to TV as a contestant on Bigg Boss 20 hosted by Salman Khan.

Early Life and Family

Qazi Touqeer was born in Srinagar in a respected family. His father M.A. Qazi was a lawyer who later turned to Sufism. His mother Syeda Rukhsana was a teacher who took early retirement. His uncle Qazi Rafi is a well-known Kashmiri singer and his childhood mentor. Qazi said, "My uncle is my favorite singer and mentor since childhood."

He has a brother Qazi Tauseef (also written Qazi Touseef) who is an entrepreneur born and brought up in Mumbai (real/step relation not confirmed). Since childhood Qazi loved acting and mimicry - he used to mimic Hindi film heroes and his brother would shoot his acts at Mughal Gardens in Kashmir. His father guided him in singing though he had no formal training.

Career Journey

Fame Gurukul (2005) - Winner

Before 2005, seeing Abhijeet Sawant win Indian Idol, Qazi felt the show was made for him and told everyone he would win a reality show. In 2005 among lakhs he was selected for Fame Gurukul (India's version of Fame Academy). Though he was in danger zone multiple times, he was always saved by public votes and finally won on 20 October 2005 along with Ruprekha Banerjee, voted by Indian public. He set a record for highest votes then. People compared his looks to Hrithik Roshan due to long hair and light brown eyes. Inside the show was also Arijit Singh - who lost but became India's top playback singer later. Qazi and Arijit are good friends since then.

President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam declared him "Hero of Kashmir". After his win, Kashmiri youth auditioned in large numbers for Indian Idol in Srinagar.

In 2009 he did Sarkaar Ki Duniya on Sony TV hosted by Ashutosh Rana. He was offered his acting debut film Take Off (2009) but while rehearsing at Ganesh Acharya Studios he fell and seriously injured his neck and was hospitalized. In 2015 he appeared in the hit song "Afghan Jalebi" in Phantom starring Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif - he is seen in the song.

Bigg Boss 20 (2026)

After years away from mainstream, Qazi returned as contestant on Bigg Boss 20 (2026) hosted by Salman Khan, along with Yung DSA, Amrapali Dubey, Mary Kom etc., bringing the Fame Gurukul winner back to national TV after 21 years.
